National Scrapbook Day 2017

18199181_285501635243323_4108275243122976061_nNational Scrapbook Day is the first Saturday in May which happens to be this Saturday. It is a day where people all over the Country gather and celebrate with Scrapbooking parties to share their talents and techniques with other. It is also a time for SALES!

It was started back in 1994 by a Scrapbook company called Creative Memories and has been celebrated every year.  But how did scrapbooking originate? Back in the 15th century, people used an album called a commonplace book where they gathered sonnets, recipes and and correspondence. The friendship album came in the 16th century and photographs started to be added to these books after 1826.

Mixed Media – Friend or Foe?

Does Mixed Media intimidate you? I know it did me. I thought that it was only for canvases and bigger projects. But it’s not!  If you are familiar with my work, you can see lots of mixed media product on many of my greeting cards. I have also published some you tube videos on this topic as well.

So what is Mixed Media really? Mixed media” tends to refer to a work of visual art that combines various traditionally distinct visual artmedia—for example, a work on canvas that combines paint, ink, and collage could properly be called a “mixed media” work, but not a work of “multimedia art.”
If you are still intimidated by this medium, Pinterest has lots of ideas to lead you down this new path. You can go as slow or as fast as your comfort level allows.

Maybe you are already a Lover of Mixed Media? Either way, if you need to stock up or have just been thinking about trying a new medium, this may just be the time! All Faber-Castell product is on sale!

Faber Castell’s lines are perfect for mixed media artists, papercrafters, and scrapbookers. This line includes pencils, pens, gelatos and markers. You can also pick up some stencils, paste and Gesso. You can easily transition some of your current work by adding some different mediums.

Tim Holtz is another brand that offers some different mediums. I use many of these products in my day to day art work. While many are intimidated by distress crayons, I find them to have multi uses. You can easily color up your texture paste or gesso by scribbling a distress crayon onto your craft mat and mixing in your medium.  This is an easy inexpensive way to get a variety of color in your art work.

Collage mediums are also great to adhere ephemera or help you create a collage. I use this product with my fingers, but there are also Collage brushes to help spread this medium. Select Tim Holtz mediums are also on sale!

Here are some of my favorite items:

So leave me a comment and let me know if Mixed Media is a friend or foe and why. I would love to hear your thoughts.

To Pre order or Not to Pre order?

With the excitement of new product and wanting to be the first to get it, many people choose to pre order. What this means is they pay up front to be put on a list to get the product once the product is sent to the on line shop. While this can be great if there is enough product sent to support the pre orders, but not so great if they run out before they get to your “pre order.”

This became evident with much of the new product released at Creativation.  The new Tim Holtz Distress Oxides had such a high demand, many people were left “in holding” awaiting new shipments.  Many people became frustrated as the shops they pre ordered from ran out of the product while other shops now had it in stock.  I unfortunately was one of those people.  I ordered the full set in February and just recently got my notification of shipment. I considered canceling my order and purchasing from shops that had the product available now, but instead ended up just waiting it out. Part of me wanted to see how long it would really take…

Now with the recent news of the delayed release of the Tim Holtz Stamping platform, many are once again playing the waiting game. But this time it is a bit different.  The delay is not due to demand, as all stores will be experiencing the delay. It has to do with the recent news of My Sweet Petunia’s awaited patent on the MISTI which was just issued.  Many manufacturers copied the design of the MISTI and gambled that the patent would not come through.  According to My Sweet Petunia, “two companies accepted the MISTI design as unique” and withdrew their product from the market.

What follows is the letter from Tonic regarding the referenced issue:

Dear Valued Customer,

Tonic is very excited to launch the new Tim Holtz Stamping platform, however we need to inform you of a delay in the launch of this product.  As you may be aware My Sweet Petunia (MSP) have been granted a patent on their Misti Stamping Platform.

While we do not consider our Tim Holtz Tonic Studios Stamp Platform to be an infringement of this patent and its claims, we do not want to expose our customers to any legal action from MSP in the event that they sell our product.  The ongoing protection and sustainability of the Tonic brand and our products are paramount to our ongoing relationship with all our retail partners.

Our attorneys are working on this case and we expect to have a resolution within the next 4 weeks.  We apologize for this inconvenience but we fully expect to be able to ship to you within the next 6 – 8 weeks.

We will be giving updates as we work with all parties to resolve this matter and hope to give you more information soon.

We appreciate your understand and patience in this matter.

Kind regards,

Tonic Studios USA

The invention of the MISTI is an amazing story! If you have not heard it, you can hear it over on the So Suzy Podcast entitled: MIHM-Iliana Myska from My Sweet Petunia . I personally love the MISTI and have the regular size as well as the mini.  I plan on ordering the newest product, Creative Corners from My Sweet Petunia as they are currently on sale, along with everything in her shop today through the Sunday April 16th, 2017. also has the original, mini and Memory MISTI on sale.

I had no intentions of purchasing the Tim Holtz Stamping platform as the MISTI’s worked great, but was sent one from the manufacturer because I do use many of the products in the Tim Holtz line.  I did a video to introduce the Stamping platform which you can see here. The version I have is a 1708e. Tonic has indicated that they plan to release 1707e in place of the original model. They have not said what the differences in the two models will be. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

There are no Rules in CRAFTING

It seems like all around us we have rules to follow. Growing up I am sure we all had rules we had to abide by and that didn’t change when we got into adulthood.  But the one place that I don’t have to follow rules is in the Craftroom!  Sure there are techniques that may require a process to follow, but I am talking more about your creativity and just being creative in general. When you don’t have constraints, you are free to think outside of the box, which makes everything possible. Sometimes that even means getting crafting advice from your husband!

Recently I have been experimenting “outside of the box” and trying to find different and non traditional items to use in my projects.  In some of my mixed media projects I have used coffee grounds and even herbs to create color and texture. There are numerous videos on You Tube to show you how to make your own texture paste and gesso. You can even use an old hotel key card as your spreading tool, eliminating the need to go out and buy Palette knives. You can even discover products that can be substituted for the more expensive items that seem to be more mainstream.

Many of us get caught up in the most recent products out in the market. We see a project that we want to CASE and immediately get deterred thinking we don’t have the supplies or products that were used.  But where is it written that we have to use exactly the same things that everyone else is using?  I haven’t read that anywhere and if it is, it is NOT a rule I am going to follow.

Over the weekend I needed some texture paste. Typically I order mine on line because I am used to a particular brand. I went to my local Hobby Lobby and couldn’t find it. I think because I was looking for something I was used to. My husband volunteered to try and find it. I think new eyes made all the difference. He pulled this product off of the shelve and asked if this particular product would work. It was pretty inexpensive and I did have a 40% off coupon so I thought I would give it a try. I LOVE IT! I found it to be not as thick as the brand I typically use and I was able to stamp on it very easily once it was dry. It still had the look and feel of texture paste, so I didn’t feel as though I was sacrificing what I was trying to achieve. But there’s more…

Often I like to color my texture paste, but when you add liquid, it tends to make the paste a little to runny. I also like to use Earth tones in my projects..uh I love vintage..did you forget and again my husband came to the rescue. He paints models and he had a product called Vallejo Pigments. It is a natural pigment that can be mixed with water, acrylics, mediums, varnishes and textures.  This is a product used for models and miniatures and probably would have never discovered it, but you bet I will be robbing…uh borrowing some of his supplies in the future. I wonder what else he has?
