FTC – Fun To Craft?

No FTC does not stand for Fun To Craft. They are the initials for the Federal Trade Commission. Now you might ask, well what do they have to do with Crafting? If you use affiliate links…a lot!

So what is an affiliate? It is a company that you have signed up with to promote their product. Bloggers and influencers use affiliate links in their post and when readers click on these links and purchase a product from that store, the blogger/influencer gets a small percentage of the sale at no EXTRA cost to the reader.

Many bloggers use affiliate links and companies, such as shareasale.com to help manage their links and support their channels, including myself. I want to be able to blog and create videos on the most up to date products, and that does cost money. I don’t make a fortune, but every little bit does help…at no EXTRA cost to my readers. Additionally, some companies also give their designers a special coupon code for their readers that offers a % off their purchase. The Designer may get a small % of that purchase at no extra cost to you.

With the increase usage of affiliate links in Social Media, the FTC recently put out a statement to remind influencers and brands to clearly disclose relationships. On instagram or social media, it can be as simple as stating “affiliate link” next to your URL. If you have a resource page that lists products that you use and recommend it could be something like “This page contains affiliate links. If you purchase, I will get a few bucks.” I have provided a link to that statement for your convenience.

Most craft bloggers use the product that they recommend and are not trying to trick you into purchasing a product. Let’s face it. This hobby can be a bit addicting, and if your social media friends can give you a tip on a good product, or recommend a sale at a store, the store should give them a little something for the referral, don’t you think?

So when you see these affiliate links, don’t feel that we are trying to deceive you, perhaps enable you, but not deceive. If the information was helpful and it does lead you to purchase that product or service, click on that link, you may save a few extra bucks as well as help out a fellow crafter.

So leave me a comment and let me know if you found this information helpful. Would you like more information on this topic in future posts? I would love to hear from you.
