To Pre order or Not to Pre order?

banner_gratitude

With the excitement of new product and wanting to be the first to get it, many people choose to pre order. What this means is they pay up front to be put on a list to get the product once the product is sent to the on line shop. While this can be great if there is enough product sent to support the pre orders, but not so great if they run out before they get to your “pre order.”

This became evident with much of the new product released at Creativation.  The new Tim Holtz Distress Oxides had such a high demand, many people were left “in holding” awaiting new shipments.  Many people became frustrated as the shops they pre ordered from ran out of the product while other shops now had it in stock.  I unfortunately was one of those people.  I ordered the full set in February and just recently got my notification of shipment. I considered canceling my order and purchasing from shops that had the product available now, but instead ended up just waiting it out. Part of me wanted to see how long it would really take…

Now with the recent news of the delayed release of the Tim Holtz Stamping platform, many are once again playing the waiting game. But this time it is a bit different.  The delay is not due to demand, as all stores will be experiencing the delay. It has to do with the recent news of My Sweet Petunia’s awaited patent on the MISTI which was just issued.  Many manufacturers copied the design of the MISTI and gambled that the patent would not come through.  According to My Sweet Petunia, “two companies accepted the MISTI design as unique” and withdrew their product from the market.

What follows is the letter from Tonic regarding the referenced issue:

Dear Valued Customer,

Tonic is very excited to launch the new Tim Holtz Stamping platform, however we need to inform you of a delay in the launch of this product.  As you may be aware My Sweet Petunia (MSP) have been granted a patent on their Misti Stamping Platform.

While we do not consider our Tim Holtz Tonic Studios Stamp Platform to be an infringement of this patent and its claims, we do not want to expose our customers to any legal action from MSP in the event that they sell our product.  The ongoing protection and sustainability of the Tonic brand and our products are paramount to our ongoing relationship with all our retail partners.

Our attorneys are working on this case and we expect to have a resolution within the next 4 weeks.  We apologize for this inconvenience but we fully expect to be able to ship to you within the next 6 – 8 weeks.

We will be giving updates as we work with all parties to resolve this matter and hope to give you more information soon.

We appreciate your understand and patience in this matter.

Kind regards,

Tonic Studios USA

The invention of the MISTI is an amazing story! If you have not heard it, you can hear it over on the So Suzy Podcast entitled: MIHM-Iliana Myska from My Sweet Petunia . I personally love the MISTI and have the regular size as well as the mini.  I plan on ordering the newest product, Creative Corners from My Sweet Petunia as they are currently on sale, along with everything in her shop today through the Sunday April 16th, 2017. Scrapbook.com also has the original, mini and Memory MISTI on sale.

I had no intentions of purchasing the Tim Holtz Stamping platform as the MISTI’s worked great, but was sent one from the manufacturer because I do use many of the products in the Tim Holtz line.  I did a video to introduce the Stamping platform which you can see here. The version I have is a 1708e. Tonic has indicated that they plan to release 1707e in place of the original model. They have not said what the differences in the two models will be. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t like bugs…but I do love butterflies! My watermark and blog signature even has butterflies. I know I am not alone. There are so many crafters out there that love to create using a theme of butterflies. You can go on Pinterest and find beautiful projects using these little beauties.

Well, if you are a lover of butterflies, you are going to love this! Currently you can get 15% off all Butterfly theme’d products. This ends April 12th at midnight, so you still have some time!

There are no Rules in CRAFTING

It seems like all around us we have rules to follow. Growing up I am sure we all had rules we had to abide by and that didn’t change when we got into adulthood.  But the one place that I don’t have to follow rules is in the Craftroom!  Sure there are techniques that may require a process to follow, but I am talking more about your creativity and just being creative in general. When you don’t have constraints, you are free to think outside of the box, which makes everything possible. Sometimes that even means getting crafting advice from your husband!

Recently I have been experimenting “outside of the box” and trying to find different and non traditional items to use in my projects.  In some of my mixed media projects I have used coffee grounds and even herbs to create color and texture. There are numerous videos on You Tube to show you how to make your own texture paste and gesso. You can even use an old hotel key card as your spreading tool, eliminating the need to go out and buy Palette knives. You can even discover products that can be substituted for the more expensive items that seem to be more mainstream.

Many of us get caught up in the most recent products out in the market. We see a project that we want to CASE and immediately get deterred thinking we don’t have the supplies or products that were used.  But where is it written that we have to use exactly the same things that everyone else is using?  I haven’t read that anywhere and if it is, it is NOT a rule I am going to follow.

Over the weekend I needed some texture paste. Typically I order mine on line because I am used to a particular brand. I went to my local Hobby Lobby and couldn’t find it. I think because I was looking for something I was used to. My husband volunteered to try and find it. I think new eyes made all the difference. He pulled this product off of the shelve and asked if this particular product would work. It was pretty inexpensive and I did have a 40% off coupon so I thought I would give it a try. I LOVE IT! I found it to be not as thick as the brand I typically use and I was able to stamp on it very easily once it was dry. It still had the look and feel of texture paste, so I didn’t feel as though I was sacrificing what I was trying to achieve. But there’s more…

shopping

Often I like to color my texture paste, but when you add liquid, it tends to make the paste a little to runny. I also like to use Earth tones in my projects..uh I love vintage..did you forget and again my husband came to the rescue. He paints models and he had a product called Vallejo Pigments. It is a natural pigment that can be mixed with water, acrylics, mediums, varnishes and textures.  This is a product used for models and miniatures and probably would have never discovered it, but you bet I will be robbing…uh borrowing some of his supplies in the future. I wonder what else he has?

Craft Room Spring Cleaning

Spring cleaning in my craft room is bitter sweet. If you are like me, it is difficult to let go of anything craft related. I know that if I destash that one embellishment that I have not used in 3 years, it would have been the perfect embellishment on my next project. But let’s get real. We don’t have unlimited crafting space, and while I would LOVE to take over my entire house with my crafting items, I am not so sure the rest of the family would appreciate that.

Now I know first hand that letting go of things is not easy, especially when it comes to our craft items. Just the thought of getting rid of anything is upsetting. We tend to build emotional attachments to some of our crafty items which brings back fond memories of all the wonderful items we have created with them. But as I said earlier, our space is not unlimited, and the more we have, the less we have space for, and we all know we need space for all those new releases and latest MUST HAVES!

So here is how I approach my Craft Room Spring cleaning. I have two boxes. The first box I fill with all the things I have not used and probably will never use. Many of these items are things I probably found on sale, or in someone else’s destash that I thought was too good to pass up. The second box I fill with items I am considering destashing, but may not be ready to pull the trigger yet. I keep these items in a plastic box with a lid and this box becomes my “go to” box. This box stacks nicely below my desk making it easy to access. There is obviously a reason that I am hanging on to these items, so I make it a point to start using them. I will either find a renewed love for the item, or realize that I can do without it.

There are also a variety of Destash groups on Facebook where you can sell your used items. This makes the pain of letting go a little easier as you now have cash to buy that “New” item you have been eyeing.

So what is your approach to destashing? I would love to hear it in the comments below.

Custom Die Cuts

cd-img1

I recently picked up some of the new Tim Holtz Die cuts and in searching for my new goodies I learned that Sizzix creates custom dies. It intrigued me, so I looked further into it.

Many people have original art work or may need a custom die for a special occasion.  It does not have to be just for papercrafting either. They create dies for fashion, home décor, quilting or even appliqué.

Sizzix Sale and Big Shot Giveaway

SBC_sz-661810_0

As a huge Tim Holtz fan, I have been anxiously awaiting the availability of some of the new product releases introduced at Creativation this year. Many have been frustrated at some of the back orders and waiting time on some of their products, including me.  The popularity of the Distress Oxides has created a Supply and Demand problem…too much demand, not enough supply! If you were smart enough to pre order, you probably already have yours.  While some of us stay frustrated (ME) many already have theirs. I have seen so many great creations with these inks, I can’t wait until mine finally arrive! If you have been fortunate enough to get your hands on these oxides, Ranger, Inc has a free Oxide label sheet and Color Chart for your new inks.
